Reducing energy by improving the water quality

Rochester Midland Corporation (RMC) is a leading manufacturer of speciality chemicals for food, sanitation, industrial cleaning and water treatment.

Matthew Joint, the Technical Sales Consultant RMC, sought Fileder’s help to supply a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system to improve the water quality feeding the boilers and thus reduce energy costs.  The water is supplied from a combination of borehole and mains. The existing filtration includes a sand filter, 5 micron sediment filter, ultraviolet disinfection system and softeners.

Fileder quoted an RO system based on the application details and arranged a demonstration for Matthew Joint and the end user to enable them to see the system and to raise any questions. This training session provided the end user with the information they required and they ordered the SRO-SYS-21 RO system. The RO system was installed after the softeners and 5 micron particulate filter, feeding the hot well/boilers onsite. The RO quality water, resulted in reducing the amount of blowdowns required due to the removal of 90 to 99.9 % of the dissolved solids present in the supply water. This allowed for the increased cycle of concentrations of the boiler water resulting in:

  • Lower water consumption
  • Reduction in blowdown rate.
  • Lower fuel consumption.
  • Less internal boiler treatment chemicals required.

This has had overall energy cost reduction of over 35% resulting in a 12 month payback on cost.
