How Does Carbon Filtration Work?

As water flows through the media, contaminants are attracted to and held onto the surface of the carbon, which effectively reduces or removes substances that could compromise water quality.

  • Premature membrane failure – RO membranes can be irreversibly damaged by exposure to oxidising agents like chlorine. Carbon filtration removes these contaminants before they reach the membrane.
  • Increased fouling and cleaning requirements – organic compounds that aren’t removed during pre-treatment can accumulate on the surface of the membrane, which can restrict water flow and reduce efficiency.
  • Reduced water quality – damaged or fouled membranes are less effective at removing contaminants from the feed water, which can lead to lower rejection rates and inconsistent water quality.
  • Higher energy consumption – RO systems must work harder with fouled membranes to maintain production rates, increasing energy consumption.

Effective pre-treatment should therefore be viewed as an investment rather than an expense. In most cases, the cost of proper pre-treatment is significantly lower than the cost of dealing with the consequences of inadequate protection.
