Case Study – Maidenhead Aquatics

Pure Water RO for Freshwater Cold Fish

Maidenhead Aquatics started from humble beginnings back in 1984. Their ethos of employing fish keepers to work in their stores ensures that the knowledge of their staff is matched only by their passion. With over 160 branches now UK wide, they specialise in everything from the common goldfish, to the more exotic marine range which feature heavily in many stores.

Dan Osborne, a Partner for Maidenhead Aquatics, runs the Ashford, Ramsgate, Gillingham and Maidstone branches.

With 2 of these branches specialising in the sale of marine fish, the need for pure water is imperative for both the upkeep of the fish they sell, and to sell to enthusiasts wishing to maintain and set up their own tanks.

Marine fish require water dosed to a’specific gravity’ which is the salinity that matches the conditions a fish lives in naturally. Seawater ranges in salinity from 33 to 38 ppt with the average salinity of ocean water being 35 ppt (35,000 TDS)

A specific gravity of 1.025 is regarded as the average dosage for marine fish by Dan. You can achieve this by adding 35g of salt to every litre of water you are choosing to produce. Water free from TDS and other chemicals is vitally important to use as the base for producing water safe for marine fish.

Fileder have worked in partnership with Dan at his several branches for years now, with different set-ups in each of the branches, designed to match the volume of water required by each.

The Ashford branch uses the tried and tested PRFRO (or Merlin) to produce their pure water. With their requirements being water less than 10 TDS, the carbon pre-filter strips the chlorine from the water, preparing it for the 2 RO membranes to follow. The introduction of the PRF-750 membranes also increases the water production by up to 70%.

The Gillingham branch has a greater requirement for pure water and as such employs the use of 2 x 20″ housings containing SPECTRUM spun and carbon cartridges, followed by the favoured low pressure HF5 membrane to produce the deionised water.

“Pure water forms the cornerstone of marine set-up and maintenance water. Without demineralising the water first, the process of obtaining a water of exacting standard and specific gravity becomes impossible.”

Fileder Filter Systems is one of the largest independent process filtration and water treatment supplier in the UK. A wide range of filtration and water treatment products are available to order for next day delivery, including carbon blocks, pleated and depth cartridges, housings and RO systems.
