Larger medical devices and systems will often include filtration built-in to the assembly. An example of this is filter cartridges installed in housings in Automated Endoscope Reprocessors (AER), air vents included in autoclaves, capsules included in washer disinfectors.

The majority of these applications are to produce bacteria free water so the typical cartridge cascade would be as shown below.

Stages of Filtration & Water Treatment

Particle Removal

Prevents debris, scale flakes, dirt and particle build up in pipework, tanks, equipment and where present, premature blinding of filtration stages further along the cascade.

Bio-Burden Removal

To help clarification and to protect the final sterile filtration stage, absolute pleated cartridges are used to remove the bulk of the spoilage contaminants.
